She said...I just First, can I say a big thank you!!! Even though my little girl has dark hair, she was still a baldy until close to her first birthday. I've looked at hair blogs before, but quickly became discouraged because she really still doesn't have much hair. Since I've learned the "crawlers" I can do so many things with her hair even though it's still pretty short. I know you did a similar post a few months back with the "shoe string" hair style. If you don't want to post this, I'm not at all offended, but thought it may be worth your reader's interest. I've included some pictures of the finished product. I'm sure just by looking at it you'll know what I did. Instead of doing the shoestrings on the top of her head, I started at the back and bottom, then finished it off with messy piggies.

Bound-Up Puffy Braid

I didn't take step-by-step pictures because it's really simple and pretty self-explanitory, once you look at the picture.

I just did a puffy braid down the middle of my daughter's head, then, since she's got lots of little flyaways, I did a section on each side of the middle and criss-crossed them over the single section. I had two "x"s, but the second set is covered up by the bows. Oh, yeah, and after the second 'x', I just pulled the middle one in half, one for each side to make pigtails.

Makes you wanna Jump Jump... Sorry I couldn't help myself. I've had that title in my head for a few weeks now.
So what we did was a basic twist on this hairstyle "the gwen".

We started out about the same. You spray the hair down to get it nice and wet, or straight out of the tub works too.
Do a center part. And then I put one side in a piggy.(I guess I did both sides but don't it's more work if you do)

Then take the unponied side and part it in half. and piggy both halfs. Repeat for the other side.

Now comes the fun part. Starting on either side take one of the piggies out and then take a small section at the bottom out and put hte rest back up. It doenst have to be perfect because its just to keep the hair out of your way. Then put a rubberband around the part left out.

Do that for each section of hair.

Next you do the same thing, take another small section of hair out put the rest back up. Then you reach down to the row below it and take the pony of hair that is diagonal from the loose hair. I like to twist it some to keep it together and then twist it into that loose hair to combine it and add a piggy. For our thin hair it works best to twist it defines the cross more.

Then do it to the one on the same half of the head as before.

Then do it to the other half of the head. So it will look like 2 sets of criss crossed laces going up either half of the head.

You repeat those steps until you run out of hair. For us we stopped at 3, we usually do 4 but someone was getting a little impatient.

When you do the top or last ones make sure you add the hair in from the top of the head also. We have very little hair on top in fact its still growing in, so we added as much of it as we could, and then just combed the rest over to one side of the head. Also when pulling through the top pony you can leave it and not pull it fully through to create a messy piggy/bun, but we got lucky with the curls and it looks cute out, you could sit and curl the hair in the piggies too if you wanted to or if you're subject is sitting really well and willing to let you do so.

I usually do a clip on the top in front to hold the hair back that I combed over but didn't get a pic of it sorry. I've also done just one big bow there too. WE get lots of compliments with this hairstyle! If anyone does this we'd love to see pics of how it turned out!

and just for laughs.. my very patient 1 yr old. What was going on while I was fixing her sisters hair.

Curly Hair Basics...

This is for all you out there with a shorty with curly hair and you wonder what you can do with it or what products work best.
For starters lets meet Kyleigh,she's been on here before but now for a formal introduction.... Everyone say, Hi Kyleigh!

As you can see Ky has curly hair. Its cute but takes some work or she looks like this.

When it was shorter we could just scrunch it after she got out of the bath. We all know what scrunching is right? If not i can try and video it for you.
For now what works the best is this. Shower or bath, we recently started using Noodle Head shampoo, we got it at Sally's beauty, but expensive. almost $6 for a bottle of JUST shampoo, I'm cheap what can I say. You can catch it on sale for about 4.50. It does have detangler in with it and has a whole line of products, the mousse and gel and all that fun hair products, but I wasn't willing to spend nearly $6 per item. So i got just the shampoo. It looks like this.

We do NOT use any conditioner in her hair yet and if it gets tangled we just spray it with water, we have also used the Johnson and Johnson's detangling spray.
First thing we do is comb her hair, it gets all the knots and tangles out of it. Boy her hair looks soo long like this.

Next we scrunch it up some to bring the curls back in.

Most days we leave it like this and let it air dry. If we are going out or anything or I'm not doing her hair up, I spray it with Garnier's Curling Shaping Gel.(there was a coupon in the paper in the last couple weeks for $1 off any Garnier styling product so if you want to try it it would make it cheaper)

It doesnt take a lot just spray some on the wet hair and scrunch. You have options here you can scrunch and then leave it to air dry or you can use a hair dryer and scrunch it and blow dry, Or if you want to you can use a diffuser, we've only used a diffuser one time and it worked but i prefer the air dry method.
After all that fuss you get this.

For a simple finish we like to just comb the front/top of the hair over and hold it back with a bow, some of the time we do use a ponytail on the side then the bow. Its getting harder to do now that the hair on top is growing in more and getting thicker and of course curling!
Garnier also has a curling mousse and it work great too. It actually leaves the curls softer than the curling gel. And those of you wanting to try somethign the curling gel WILL make straight hair curly if you spray it and scrunch, if you use a diffuser or a hair dryer it helps it stay longer. The results wont be as curly as someone with natural curls but it will work.

Little braid buns with a flip~

This week I decided to do something that I do a lot of, two small ponies on the sides. But I did a few cute things to mix it up. I am sure I copied someone somewhere... but here is my version. I braided the piggy's and made them into buns (leaving out the ends to stick up) and I zigzagged the part (I like to start at her part and then zigzag over I think she looks cuter that way.). Added a couple of bows and flipped the back hair then wallah you have a cute little do.
Here are some pictures, ignore the laundry in the background... At least it is folded! And YES I did her hair in the kitchen (gasp!). Time was of the essence. but she did get to school on time. A very quick hair do!

YEAH YOU HEARD ME.

I've had three people show me (more than once) and it's either my fat fingers or Sophia's ultra straight thin hair? Either way, I totally stink at it. No denying.

But I wanted to do it SO BADLY. Sophia also looks awful with no bangs. AWFUL. (I'm a loving mother, I'm just honest :P ) And then the emails started POURING in! I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN'T FRENCH BRAID! I mean..coughimnottheonlyonewhocan'tfrenchbraidcough. And surprisingly, there are a LOT of shorties who 'need' bangs too.

SO! For all of you who fit into that category, I revised Polly's adorable TCP do. This was the first attempt at it so it's uneven and such but I did it a couple days later for church and it was BEAUTIFUL (yes, should've taken pics of that one..)

Oh ya, it's just that easy. You all know how to do this one! (and if you don't. SHAME..ok here's a link. Learn it. Love it. Because it's how I 'french braid')

Excuse the nudity. Shorty's developed an issue with getting her shirts wet. *rolleyes*

Then, just like Polly's, pull the 'headband' end back into the messy piggies in the back.

Shoestring Piggies

Hi, I'm a guest on here!

When my daughter decided to hack off her bangs, and some other parts of her hair, I was forced to take her from 'medium-length and kinda-curly' to 'pixie-short with no curls'. I've spent the last month and a half or so trying out hairstyles that distract from her atrocious bangs. This is one we've fallen back on a lot lately, it only takes about 10 minutes, which goes really fast when she's watching a movie or something.

Get your daughter's hair really wet. This would work really well with gel or pomade to keep the lines distinct, but I didn't have it on hand. Start with a square or rectangle on top of your daughter's head. My daughter has bangs, so we started just behind them.

Take the smallest amount you feel you can, horizontally across the front/top of the square. Pull it all the way to one side and pony-tail it.

Take the section just behind that, again, as small as you can, and pull that all the way to the opposite side of the head and ponytail it.

Take the third section of hair, pulled all the way the same direction as the first. Add the first to the third by pulling it over the second, and ponytail it.

Take the fourth section of hair, pulled the same direction as the second. Add the second to it and ponytail. Continue in this way until you've gone as far back as you want. I separated one section at the close-to-middle and did piggies today, but I've joined them into one and it's cute that way, too.

Add some bows, maybe some curls, and there you have it! (I did not add curls, since it was a 'stay-at-home' day.)

And here you can see some of her previous damage. Oh, and it's not really that uneven at the ears; she tucked one side behind her ear just before the picture. Goofy girl! :(

Hello there and a new hair style...

So to those of you who don't know me I am Polly from Blogging and bliss. I don't really do hair per say... I guess you could say I do my daughters. I cut my boys hair and my husbands but I am self taught. You really can't go too wrong with clippers... I have only one girl and she is with very little hair. She is 9 years old and I have to keep cutting it short because it looks bad long. In fact I had her do picture retakes this year thinking her hair just looked bad because they sent her to PE yes PE before pictures were taken. Yeah anyways even her retakes came back bad. I had to realize that it was her hair and it needed cut. I felt bad for her but it looks so cute cut short so I can flip it. I tell her that when she hits puberty she will have thicker hair and we can grow it long... Thankfully she agrees. So She is a little tired in the pictures if you can't tell! Waking her up early to get this post was fun. I now feel for you EMMERS. Thanks for the invite to guest post! Hopefully I can do more for you!

So on with the show. I did her hair in a style that I call the TCP doo. I stole it from a picture of a girl on little flyer sent out from the children's place. It was way cute. I had to totally adapt it for Ab. The girl in the picture had WAY longer hair.

First I always like to start with wet hair. When you do a pony or anything a little shorty's hair will stay better that way.

Next a part her hair as usual. Taking about a 1 inch piece off the biggest side and making a pony making sure that it is low on the side and towards the back.

Next take another piece all the way across the head maybe 2-3 inches. French braid it starting from the opposite side of the part. Make sure that the pony becomes part of the braid. I used it on the second or third piece. (SORRY I totally suck at braiding! Even had to do it twice then I just gave up) Braid all the way down using every last bit. Pony it off.

Next split the hair that you have left in half. We are going to make FUN ponies. At least that is what I call them... You also need to make sure that you grab the hanging end of the braid into the pony on that side. For a FUN pony you take the hair into a rubber band and twist until you have just enough band for one more twist and you grab the hair but do not pull it all the way through. You leave out a length with a little bump. Then hairspray and done. Here is an old picture of her hair a few years back when I discovered this do.

Addendum: CPSC

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In February 2009, new requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) take effect. Manufacturers, importers and retailers are expected to comply with the new Congressionally-mandated laws. Beginning February 10, 2009, children’s products cannot be sold if they contain more than 600 parts per million (ppm) total lead. Certain children’s products manufactured on or after February 10, 2009 cannot be sold if they contain more than 0.1% of certain specific phthalates or if they fail to meet new mandatory standards for toys.

Under the new law, children’s products with more than 600 ppm total lead cannot lawfully be sold in the United States on or after February 10, 2009, even if they were manufactured before that date. The total lead limit drops to 300 ppm on August 14, 2009.

The new law requires that domestic manufacturers and importers certify that children’s products made after February 10 meet all the new safety standards and the lead ban. Sellers of used children’s products, such as thrift stores and consignment stores, are not required to certify that those products meet the new lead limits, phthalates standard or new toy standards.

The new safety law does not require resellers to test children’s products in inventory for compliance with the lead limit before they are sold. However, resellers cannot sell children’s products that exceed the lead limit and therefore should avoid products that are likely to have lead content, unless they have testing or other information to indicate the products being sold have less than the new limit. Those resellers that do sell products in violation of the new limits could face civil and/or criminal penalties.

When the CPSIA was signed into law on August 14, 2008, it became unlawful to sell recalled products. All resellers should check the CPSC Web site (www.cpsc.gov) for information on recalled products before taking into inventory or selling a product. The selling of recalled products also could carry civil and/or criminal penalties.

While CPSC expects every company to comply fully with the new laws resellers should pay special attention to certain product categories. Among these are recalled children’s products, particularly cribs and play yards; children’s products that may contain lead, such as children’s jewelry and painted wooden or metal toys; flimsily made toys that are easily breakable into small parts; toys that lack the required age warnings; and dolls and stuffed toys that have buttons, eyes, noses or other small parts that are not securely fastened and could present a choking hazard for young children.

When I heard earlier today that it wasn't going to cause a problem for thrift stores I was really happy. I, personally, don't shop at thrift stores..but I donate often.

Now, why this is still a big problem. (And please, if anyone knows of anything involving this, let me know!) This part worries me (and perhaps I'll find myself in thrift stores now haha) it still will impact us at regular clothing stores. I still think clothing prices at stores like Target/Walmart will skyrocket. (Sniffle..and The Children's Place and Gymboree). I really hope these places can find ways to offset the cost of testing each article instead of just passing it on to us.

Let alone small businesses...I shudder to think about all the cute baby boutiques around here that will be totally put out of business by this.

Shorty rocks a..FULL PONY?

This brings me to a crossroads. I haven't quite decided what I'm doing from here. Part of me would like to grow it out. Part of me says to keep it short so it doesn't look stringy.

We've been so caught up in holidays and vacation and such that we haven't done much of anything to shorty's hair. So I was thinking..there are so many people who still use this blog even tho it's come to a standstill. I don't want to delete it! I also don't want it to become stagnant. So, faithful blogger friends...I was thinking that maybe there is someone who still has a shorty who has less hair than mine who has time to dedicate to doing her hair in fancy new ways for others less fortunate in hair areas.

Guest contributers? Anyone interested? I'd love to keep this blog where it is (so everyone can find it) and just add a few new people as authors.

New safety rules for children's clothes have stores in a fit

Some owners say the cost of testing for toxic lead and phthalates will shut their businesses. The law goes into effect Feb. 10.

Barring a reprieve, regulations set to take effect next month could force thousands of clothing retailers and thrift stores to throw away trunkloads of children's clothing.

The law, aimed at keeping lead-filled merchandise away from children, mandates that all products sold for those age 12 and younger -- including clothing -- be tested for lead and phthalates, which are chemicals used to make plastics more pliable. Those that haven't been tested will be considered hazardous, regardless of whether they actually contain lead.

"They'll all have to go to the landfill," said Adele Meyer, executive director of the National Assn. of Resale and Thrift Shops.

The new regulations take effect Feb. 10 under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which was passed by Congress last year in response to widespread recalls of products that posed a threat to children, including toys made with lead or lead-based paint.

Supporters say the measure is sorely needed. One health advocacy group said it found high levels of lead in dozens of products purchased around the country, including children's jewelry, backpacks and ponchos.

Lead can also be found in buttons or charms on clothing and on appliques that have been added to fabric, said Charles Margulis, communications director for the Center for Environmental Health in Oakland. A child in Minnesota died a few years ago after swallowing a lead charm on his sneaker, he said.

But others say the measure was written too broadly. Among the most vocal critics to emerge in recent weeks are U.S.-based makers of handcrafted toys and handmade clothes, as well as thrift and consignment shops that sell children's clothing.

"We will have to lock our doors and file for bankruptcy," said Shauna Sloan, founder of Salt Lake City-based franchise Kid to Kid, which sells used children's clothing in 75 stores across the country and had planned to open a store in Santa Clara, Calif., this year.

There is the possibility of a partial reprieve. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is responsible for enforcing the law, on Monday will consider exempting clothing and toys made of natural materials such as wool or wood. The commission does not have the authority to change the law but can decide how to interpret it.

But exempting natural materials does not go far enough, said Stephen Lamar, executive vice president of the American Apparel and Footwear Assn. Clothes made of cotton but with dyes or non-cotton yarn, for example, might still have to be tested, as would clothes that are cotton-polyester blends, he said.

"The law introduces an extraordinarily large number of testing requirements for products for which everyone knows there's no lead," he said.

Clothing and thrift trade groups say the law is flawed because it went through Congress too quickly. By deeming that any product not tested for lead content by Feb. 10 be considered hazardous waste, they contend, stores will have to tell customers that clothing they were allowed to sell Feb. 9 became banned overnight.

These groups say the law should be changed so that it applies to products made after Feb. 10, not sold after that date.

That would take action by Congress, however, because the Consumer Product Safety Commission's general counsel has already determined that the law applies retroactively, said commission spokesman Scott Wolfson.

The regulations also apply to new clothing. That won't be a problem for large manufacturers and retailers, industry experts say, but it will be a headache for small operators such as Molly Orr, owner of Molly O Designs in Las Vegas.

Orr has already produced her spring line of children's clothes. She says she can't afford the $50,000 it would cost to have a private lab test her clothing line, so she's trying to sell her inventory at a steep discount before Feb. 10. After that, she is preparing to close her business.

"We have a son with autism, so we are all about cleaning up the toxins that our children are exposed to," she said. "But I think the law needs to be looked at more closely to see how it is affecting the economy in general."

Thrift store owners say the law stings because children's garments often come in new or nearly new, because children typically outgrow clothing quickly.

Carol Vaporis, owner of Duck Duck Goose Consignment in New Port Richey, Fla., said her store stocks barely used brand-name clothing from places such as Limited Too and Gymboree.

"We really provide a service to the community to help people get clothes for their children they otherwise couldn't afford," she said.

Families have been bringing more clothes to consignment stores, where they get a chunk of the proceeds, to earn a little cash this winter, she said. She plans to contact her congressional representatives and senators to ask them to amend the law but says there's not enough awareness about the repercussions of the law to force anything to change.

Many retailers and thrift stores appear to be unaware that the law is changing. Of half a dozen Southern California children's thrift stores contacted by The Times, only one had heard of the law. Organizations such as Goodwill say they're still investigating how the law will affect them because there is so much confusion about what will be banned.

Cynthia Broockman, who owns two consignment stores and a thrift shop in Virginia, recently stopped accepting children's products for resale. That raised the ire of a man who was trying to sell his son's castoffs there and had not heard of the new rules.

"I think it's not understood by people how sweeping and far-reaching this is," she said. "The ripples that are going to go forth from this are just astonishing."

Guys this is so far reaching it's not even funny. No more ebaying off your old kids clothes, no more buying used clothes off of ebay. No more "boutique" outfits..no more outlets. Say goodbye to Etsy. Clothing prices in REGULAR stores will SKYROCKET because it's extremely expensive to get EACH ARTICLE of clothing tested. All my used clothes in great shape will end up in landfills instead of going to thirdworld countries where they could do some good (and where they're not obsessing over lead..they just want clothes).

Down to basics

A few people asked if I'd do some simpler stuff and some of the basics because their shorty doesn't have as much as mine. So I did these all in one sitting which should cover the excuses of A- hey those are sloppy and uneven, B- nice faces, kid and C- Uhm what's with the gross looking bows.

These are piggies pulled down further on the head, the bows didn't wanna stay in this one today. In this one you can have the bows in front of the piggies (like I did in this) or you can have them on the sides (so on the top of the head).

So really, this was gonna be MUCH cooler than it is. I WAS going to do this all around her head, but she would NOT sit still. So I took a bunch out and stuck with the top, which wasn't as effective looking. I'll post it anyway, and you can see what I was GOING to do and try that for yourself.

This is what WAS going to happen.

Did it all the way around..

Then I did a sort of zig zag with them..so they slanted off to one side. You can see a remaining green band over her ear, that was later removed along with all the others except the top three.

Then I did one more zag and went back the other way.

As you can see, the plan was to go all the way around the head, which would work if your girly will sit still. Then end up in the middle wherever you want..I'd probably do some big curls and pin them in the middle if I were to do it.

Ya. Halloween. Stuff. N junk. I really have no other reason for not blogging. Oh and her short hair. BUT you will be SHOCKED and AMAZED that this one worked..pay attention 'short in back' girls :D

Jauna did this one and sent it to me. YAY Yet another that works for thin curly and thin straight!

Here's Jauna's first and then I'll post mine and step by step :)

I made a slanted part to start. I didn't ask Jauna, but I'm not sure this is possible WITHOUT making your part first.

Then just climbers.

Same across the top! The most important part is watching where you end up. You finish the bottom one right above the ear, you gotta finish the top one right above the other ear. We were in a big hurry so the parts aren't straight and I didn't try to get all the little strays back in the ponies. Also, I think I did more elastics on the bottom than the top. Next time I'll get the numbers the same. (yup just counted. 5 top 6 bottom)

Butterfly

Sort of a throwback to the flower but it's a butterfly and not braided. And it's held in place with a rubber band which means, at least for us, it'll stay better.

High Pony it

Separate the hair. I started top half/bottom half

Then top/bottom

Pomade (WHAT! I can't help doing this picture every time..oh my, hey everyone, look at our WII Wheels! WOO! Did I mention I'm still on pain pills? Wow that's a mess. I'm not normally down this low on the floor..this is a really long paranthasee'd parentheses )

Then you bobby pin them down so you can get the band around. I tried to keep it close to the inner pony so it wouldn't be too difficult to get the band around.

Put the band around and you have this.

So you can see how it all got in that other band.

Then you can sorta play with the pieces and separate them making them more defined.

Triangles 'n' wormy bunz

We started out doing something entirely different. This one just happened. I love the parts, I have to say. The wormy bunz will take some work. Getting the rubber bands at the base is probably the trickiest part.

First make a triangle part in the center of the hair. Then you twist the hair really tight over and over until it starts to curl in on itself.

Then you let it wrap around and around until the hair is all wrapped. Put a rubber band at the base to hold the bun.

Then continue making triangle parts..inverting every other one. (This wasn't very technical, I was in a hurry)

Criss Cross headband

So you start by an ear, do two ponies like this

Criss cross them until you get to the middle.

Then do the other side til you get to the middle

Then you have 4 ponies in the middle.

For dissin' on the bands that everyone else loves! Whether we got a bad batch, or it's because Shorty's hair is so thin that it's wrapped a zillion times, or they're just not my favorites, we seem to be a minority!

I'll never buy them again, but it seems like a lot of you will, so..forget I hate them hehe. I'll stick with rubberbands!!

As for hairdo's, we've been SO BUSY that I haven't done anything new yet. I study her head daily tho. I have a couple ideas I may try this week. Don't give up on her hacked hair yet!

Double Zig Zag

Remember the zig zag? It's no longer possible haha.

I decided to try this, and it will work. It didn't work well today because these rubber bands SUCK. Ya I said it. SUCK. SUCK HARD.

Okay, I'm tossing this in here because I had a bunch of emails and a comment asking what brand they are that sucks so bad... I really don't want anyone buying crappy products so I'll spill..These are the walmart ones in the baby section..the separated ones in the little container..lots of colors. They're awful, awful. One day in her hair they actually BROKE because we were in the sun all day. She hadn't even touched them, they just turned brittle and broke off!!

Anyway, if I had used rubber rubber bands instead of the 'no break' (which tend to break our hair MORE) it would've stayed in place. Mental note.

But you can get the idea :) I tried to go all the way down, no go. I'm thinking in a couple weeks we can.

I've thought and thought about how to help those with even less hair than Sophia, and I'm not sure I have any more great ideas.

Jauna, you'll remember her with her daughter Kyleigh, has a little girl named Gracie. She's not quite a year old, so Jauna suggested that some of our previous hairstyles could possibly work. She set out on a mission and figured out one for sure that does!

Also, I have some news that may be slightly disturbing to those who understand the real 'hair struggle' that faces some little girls.

We cut Sophia's hair.

Into a drastic A-line.

Not my intention. I said A-line, the hairdresser heard "OMG THIS MOM IS DARING! YAY!!!" And cut it pretty dang drastic. When I realized what she was doing it was TOOOOOOOOO late.

Don't get me wrong, the haircut is 'good' but it's TOO much (And I'm daring, check out my own hair!) I just hate when it turns into puppy dog ears. SO, I have cut it up a bit myself to make it less puppy, more little girl and it looks a lot better. I'll post the pics of before I cut it up. My snips didn't make a HUGE difference, just enough to make my heart stop pounding in my chest when I looked at her. :P

Trip down hairless memory lane

I got a sweet email asking about what to do with REALLY short hair still growing in. Lemme tell ya, it was NOT that long ago that I was trying to figure out the same thing.

I've sat and thought about how to help her out, and the best I can do today is show pics of what I did when Sophia had almost nothin.

Without further ado, Sophia's nonhair hair from last year. (you thought I was kidding!)

Here is Sophia in July of last year. (This is how much I love you all. I'm willing to put a totally dooftastic picture of me on my blog for you JUST to show you her hair.) Now, this pic is how I 'viewed' Sophia's hair. I cut up the back when it grew long and mullet like.

However, then I see pics like this (same day) and wonder how I viewed it as anything BUT a mullet :P

This is the beginning of October of last year.

This is around that same time. Notice, I tried to do whatever possible to make it look like I was 'doing' her hair haha This one worked well (I hadn't cut up the back for a bit) so this one is a possibility. She's messed up the top in this picture, but usually I'd part the top along with the back and basically GLUE it down with gel, hairspray, pomade, whatever would work. Then I'd put tiny little bows back there. It helped satisfy the 'itch' for hair.

Halloween of last year. (man I thought she had lots of hair....)

Now, in case you feel like it'll never grow in. This is the beginning of December of last year. She finally had enough to LOOK like real hair.

Ribbon climbers into messy piggies

We finally got our stuff moved. I'm still unpacking but I'm taking a much needed break at the comp.

I played it easy yesterday and did this hairstyle. It's simple, cute and always gets a lot of compliments. I didn't take step by steps but you can figure it out with the pics. It's not anything fancy or too new, but another variation of a few styles I've already done.

I did end up clipping the extra ribbon. I wanted to find some pink bows to go in it but well..yeah moving.

Criss Cross

Today was a BAD SIT STILL DAY.

BAD.

Rip my own hair out bad.

So um. This looks cruddy and uneven. But you get the idea. I wanted to go all the way down, but well..BAD SIT DAY.

Did I mention today was a not sitting so still day?

So you start with your first piggie and put a ribbon in there with it while you're wrapping the hair up. It's best if you find the middle of the ribbon and go over a little, but you should be able to tug it to adjust it after it's in.

So you bring it over to the other side and that's your beginning.

I decided to do four down her whole head (like I said, I stopped)..you could easily do this with two (I believe other hair blogs have done that) or other variations. So you just do your little ponies into ponies.

Just keep crossin.

Looked cute with four, decided to do it into two so I could have matching bows, then couldn't find said bows. I liked it both ways, but the two would've looked better with bows. Four seemed to stand alone well.

You could always leave the ribbon longer, curl the back..etc. I would've fixed it all up but um..our ceiling fell in yesterday, so we've been living in craziness. That's my excuse. Is it good enough? Am I out of trouble?

Braided Flower

Modified from Piper's Hairdo's. It actually started out as just me braiding some pieces and ended up looking like Piper's..which makes me happy. I know it's not the same AT ALL, but I've loved that one from the second I saw it. So I SORTA found a way to do it. (Edited to add-I also just realized that Hair Today did a version of it too)

We CAN do a full pony but it's really sad looking, so we don't. So half pony.

I pushed some hair to each side and found the longest pieces (the middle ones) to braid. Pomade.

Then braided and tucked two on top and two on bottom.

Then I undid the side pieces I was keeping. Since they were short I thought they'd work best for the regular hair parts instead of trying to braid them. So I tucked one forward

And one at the bottom and one on each side. Then left some pokey pieces because they were too short, and I thought they were cute spiky anyway.

This isn't innovative, but I wanted to tell you about a product that was brought to my attention. Thermal Heat Setting Spray.

I like to pride myself on knowing about hair. I have had short hair for a while and I love finding new products for it. But this one flew under my radar (well mostly because my hair holds curl well.)

As I've said before, Sophia's does not. No matter HOW MUCH I hairspray. I even tried hairspraying before (also bad, do NOT do that..bad for your hair). So a hairstylist I know suggested I try thermal heat setting spray. I bought ours at Sally's. They only had one brand. They carry it at salons tho. You spray it on before you curl. HINT: Do NOT spray all over hair!! Spray each spot at a time..otherwise it all gets tangely and messy and a little sticky. don't panic, when it goes on, it WILL be sticky..but after it curls it isn't.

This is how great it held the curl. I'm excited! (Sorry they're blurry)

The "gwen"

Really, It reminded me so much of Gwen Stefani when I was done. My friend Jauna came up with this one on her cute Ky. Whenever I try Jauna's hairstyles they do NOT end up the same, as Ky has REALLY curly hair. Sophia's is SO stick straight. So I started with Jauna's idea, and had to finish differently.

I parted in the middle first

Then down the side

I did three up. Jauna did two.

Then The hair that's left on top made a 4th for me (made a third for Jauna's)

Worked for Jauna and Ky to leave it, not so much on Sophia.

So we folded them forward and made loops

The Spiral Beehive

Oh my friends. Brief moment of inspiration turned long process. But not too long. Maybe 30 min. Be not alarmed, it was EASY.

This one turned out cuter than I thought it would. Soooo yay! I'm always looking for hairdo's that'll stay all day while she's in this 2 year old rough n tumble time. I'm also counting this as an updo. If you were to leave more in the middle you could easily pin it into curls to look dressier. (Hey, I found a new hair blog, she actually posted this one a day before me...so even tho it did come from my brain, it was not original HAHA. So check hers out..I like where she started it! Pigs and Ponies )

Start off with your pony's into pony climbers

Then when you get to the top, go a row back and go around the head again. I did these in alternating colors so you could see the rows easier.

To make it look better, on the second row I placed the bands inbetween the two bands on the first row..Just cleans up the look a bit, makes it more interesting.

At the end you're left with a tiny pony in the middle, so I twisted them together, rubber banded them in the center there..

Only pulled half the hair through on the final loop so the hair would stick down under the flower clip. (Think messy pony) There are a few pieces sticking up here and there that wouldn't make it into the next pony. That can be alleviated if you hairspray them down. I didn't for these and I should've. But easily fixable.

Zig Zags

I laid awake one night and thought of this. Wasn't sure if I'd seen it, looked, couldn't find it. Planned on doing it..two days later the lovely lady of She Does Hair did it. hahahah

So I'm finally getting around to doing it myself. I need practice. It's horribly apparent (in a rush too..the parts are awful LOL). But it's DO ABLE on her thin/short hair so I'm excited.

Do a top part all the way across her hair and put a pony on one side

Then do another part all the way across and pony it off to the other side..Then repeat. It works well to get your part all combed and nice looking BEFORE adding the previous ponytail.

Fancy headband

Well, the headband itself is not fancy ;). The do is def cute for a flowergirl or something similar. I wanted to play more sort with how I did that twisted headband. With this one I took it all the way around the head instead of just the crown. I have a bunch of matching clips, but it looked okay without flowers. These are the only ones I had that matched..they're not my DREAM flower for this.

The hair going around the head. See where they meet in the middle? I did it that way because I could tuck that down with either a bobbypin or another flower clip.

I did it without the top two and decided to put two more in up there.

I've gotten this one a lot in email and a couple comments so I'll address it here.

She doesn't :P

She sits as still as a patient 2 year old can. I say patient because she does sit a little more still than I'd imagine others probably do. DS NEVER would've lol.

It started in the bathroom when she only had a TINY tuft at the top. Give her a toothbrush and she'd sit still for quite a bit (course, then I was only doing a single pony at the top).

That one still pretty much works. She'll brush her teeth for a good amount of time.

The newest one (and you can see it in the pictures) is rubber bands. She puts them all on her finger. Until the whole thing is covered. She also likes to dump out my hair basket with all my supplies. She ALSO enjoys using the water bottle to spray my feet, the carpet, her face, her brother..etc. That one really does keep her entertained. The TV is also on..I now style in our family room because I can sit on the couch and she can sit on the floor and mess around with the basket or water bottle and watch tv.

Watch them with the rubber bands tho. This last time she got them on really tight somehow and her finger started to turn colors. EEP. She hasn't done it much since..not sure if it's because I flipped out trying to get them off fast or if it tingled too much when the blood went back in LOL.

OH and sorting the bands! If you have a bunch of colored bands and an organizer (even a medicine organizer..the kind that says mon/tue/wed/thur/fri/sat/sun..ya know?) they can sort the colors for you and 'be your big helper'. She likes feeling important and like she's helping. You can also ask for her to hand you a band, a bow, a comb, hairspray, whatever. Even if you don't need it ;) She'll probably be more than happy to 'assist'.

April says: I have my 3 year old eat breakfast while I do her hair. she is a slow eater so it keeps her in place for a long time :) I too let her squirt everything with the squirt bottle... and she loves to drink out of it too, though I have to make sure she doesn't do that with the other hair bottles. Ugh.

haha Yeah Sophia drinks out of it too! I have to watch her with the hairspray because of it. Could you imagine that flavor? Yuck.

TF Says: I sit mine in front of the TV.....she's done it since her first pony at 6 months, and still now at 3!!

I have been doing her hair from the time I could first make two teeny tiny pigtails at the top of her head. We called them devil's horns, lol. I sit her in my bathroom sink to keep her contained. She usually will brush her teeth while I'm messing with her hair, or if she gets bored of that, we'll make faces at the little girl and the mommy in the mirror until I'm done. Another thing she likes to do (that's also a bonus for me! Yeah!) is that I always spray her hair down with infusium before I begin. With her sitting directly in front of the bathroom mirror, it always gets all over it. So, I'll give her a windex wipe and let her go to town on the mirror. I have to watch her to make sure it doesn't go in her mouth, but it keeps her busy, and keeps my mirror clean! LOL.

Awesome idea! I wish I'd thought of this one! I wonder if it'd work to give her a dust rag and follow her around the house doing her hair while she dusts..mwahaha. Either way, you better BELIEVE I'm going to be using this one in the future! Oh and thanks :D I love having awesome readers! I also apparently enjoy exclamation points! ! !!!!! ! I'm in an expressive mood today, I guess.

We get cheap, clear chapstick and she gets to put it on while I do her hair. She loves it. Especially since its really the only time she gets to use it.
She could sit there for twenty minutes while applying chapstick over and over and over...

Ohh Also a fantastic idea! Too bad my son doesn't have long hair, he LOOOOVES chapstick!

Thin hair 'french braid'

It's not at all a french braid, lemme put that out there. I have TRIED and TRIED to do one, but with her hair being so thin, straight and fine I can NOT get it to work. I've done this one before, and I KNOW probably everyone on the other hair blogs has as well. Let's just say it's the 'poor hair man's' version of a french braid. I really wanted to do them with this shirt and figured this was a close second.

This one is way easy to do, way easy to customize. Works with a headband.

Works with two bows..and it would work with bows at every rubber band (if you had them). Also probably be adorable with 'rag bows'..(tear some short strips of fabric, tie them around and leave them just in a knot)

I got an email from Jamie who has two CUTE hair challenged girls. The younger, Kassie, has thin and curly hair. This worked in her hair perfectly! In fact, Jamie has twisted them which is way cute. I've tried this with a ribbon but keep failing, I'll keep trying haha.

So I tried it her way, which did not end up amazing haha. (Yes, it IS clean laundry and blocks...Yes, I am grossed out I took pics with my house like that. Yes, I am normal :P )

Jill wanted to know what to do for her one year old who has little to no hair, so I'll put it here for others who might have the same question..

Sophia was completely (ok I guess not COMPLETELY..think downy chick) bald until she was 1. And at 1 I barely had enough to do one single silly looking pony right on top of her head. My biggest tip is take care of what she's got! I know they're just babies, but it's helpful if once a week you can condition it. I used my own (which is bed head's moisture maniac) and was very careful to not rinse into her eyes..but you could use one of the older kid's shampoos that has conditioner in it. Then they only have to sit through one rinsing (and they're normally tear free.) Scrubbing the head has been rumored to stimulate growth too..so washing the hair fairly often and brushing with a baby brush after could help. Until it's long enough to put in a clippy on the side (basically all we could get Soph's to do) we just did headbands or combed to one side or the other. Mostly, it was not an attractive time for Sophia's head LOL

Pony Headband

This is similar to a couple headbands I've seen on all the other amazing ladies' blogs. Some of them have done braids, some knots so I'm sure some have done these. I was just so excited to see that they worked on Sophia!

Next time I'll make them smaller so it's more headband like..but it was a good first try! Also a tip, leave some hair at the end by the ear so it looks more natural..don't grab it all like I did. (I think this has to do with the fact that it's short and thin hair? It looks fine on longer hair to grab it all which is why I did..) That's the second thing I'll change next time ;)

Part from ear to ear and keeping the hair wet, pull each pony into the next all the way across.

Pouting is necessary when taking pictures.

Yet again the best face shot I could get. Ugh.

Also, I decided to change the post before this one's title. I had a lot of emails about it and a few comments that it actually would work well for a lot of girls...ok and I ended up liking it after a few hours. So "Meh" no longer. It has a name now haha

Snake ponies

This was just gonna be the front row of bands but it was irritating her with the pony being so close to her face so I wound it back around. The last one isn't even, it's further down on her head to allow for a bow (so you can still see the middle band..it made the bow even with that end band..the illusion of being 'even')

Anyway, I do like it for the off the face factor (ok she likes it for that reason hah). I figured I'd post it in case it sparks some ideas in you. It gave me a few ideas for how I could improve on it and I may try it in a couple days.

Crown N Curls

So this was experimental, it doesn't look the best. It has hope however, so I'm gonna keep trying (next time Sophia decides to sit still for a long time, that is.)

So take and twist

Grab in the next section of hair

And twist them together

And so on. We took a break right here. Then we continued around that side and around the back to the other side.

Bad picture, sorry. Wiggly.

Then just added some curls.

You can see where it ended on the other side I had a rubber band. Covered it with a bow, put another matching bow on the other side.

Simple climbers for really thin hair

My friend Jauna did this on her cute DD, Kyleigh. Kyleigh has thin curly hair. I actually think it worked BETTER on Ky than my Sophia. I think some of that has to do with Sophia having bangs?

Didn't do step by step because you can figure it out. But you do your middle part pony and pull it as a climber back into two piggies.

And then into two more piggies. You'll notice I put mine really close to the part in the back so they're more piggie-ish. (Pretend the parts are straight, She was dancing to Kai Lan)

Braided Bunz

Yeah, not so creative on the names or the hairstyle today.

Soph was in a bad mood today so the pics are pretty lackluster and the hairdo had to be fast.

Piggies

Then I put some pomade on my hands, ran it through the piggies and braided them as far as I could go without getting tons of fly aways. Then I twisted them around like a bun and wrapped the non braided hair at the end around the bun.

Then a soft pony holder to hold the hair.

This was the best 'front on' shot I got. It's like she's 2 or somethin'.

Mop Top

Today I messed around a little. It'll take some perfecting, you'll see what I mean.

So, High pony.

I put a really waxy pomade on my hand and pulled the hair through it like this

Then tucked them under like this and bobby pinned them.

What it looks like after you pomade it. Makes it nice and pliable. I use bed head's waxy stick. Its REALLY nice and strong.

Basically I just started in the front and worked my way around..made sure to leave some extra in the middle to fill in spots that had a hole.

I didn't have a ribbon that matched, unfortunately. I just threaded it through and tied it in back. It looked fine without the ribbon. Can't decide which way I like it better. (Ignore the curls, they didn't stick around..her hair doesn't curl easily, but it'd be cute if you can get yours to!)

Goodness gracious, she'll sit still for getting her hair done but try to take a picture? Forget it. This is the best I could get for today. Sometime in the future I'll show her hair when it's poofed and has been blown out.

Like I said earlier, her hair is cut in an A-line. It's got about two months of growth on it. I'm stumped on if I should grow it longer or leave it short til it's thicker. Suggestions?? You can see that the side pieces haven't all grown in yet. That doesn't show when it's just down and blown out, but it does attribute to the fact that some styles don't work yet!

She wouldn't sit still, so the flash had to come out, sorry.

The A-line isn't over the top dramatic...which makes it easier to do styles on.

Knottyness

I WISH I had enough hair to do three rows, but alas, I do not. I loved this one because it looks like it'll stay in, which is important if your little one still takes naps. (We also have a 3 hour cartrip ahead of us today, carseat hair=not pretty)

So shorties, here's what we came up with..

I knew that it wouldn't work for three without even trying, so I parted down the middle. I also knew there was no way to get 5 knots, so I planned on 3. It was still pushin' it, I must say. Soph doesn't have enough hair in front yet. But it sorta semi worked.

So, obviously, part in the middle.

Do the 'knot' by pulling the hair down through the middle of the ponytail (there's another pic below that shows that better) This is the one that proves her front hair is still not very thick.

Gather the first pony in the second

Take a break here. OK, not mandatory but today was a bad 'sit still day' so it was for us.

Here's the other pic I told you about. You sorta part that hair and shove the pony down in the middle.

Done with the knots.

The back. You could leave it here very easily, but it was lacking something to me..

So I pulled them together and put them into a final pony and pulled it halfway through on the last pull and left a little fan of hair at the top.

And added a bow at the rubber band.

She was refusing a face shot, so this is about the best you'll get. I left some of the sides down instead of pulling it all back to give it a 'princess' look. It'd be really easy to pull those up and get all the hair out of the face!

(FTR, No, the neon bands aren't cute, but the work a LOT better in DD's fine hair, the no break kind do NOT stay put. You can get these at hair supply stores, I go to sally's. I THINK they come in black. That's my next purchase)

Climbers into high piggies

I'm not starting out easy. In fact, I pretendeth not..this wasn't simple. But I have a GOOD subject. She may be 2 but she sits STILL for her hair (until 5 min to the end LOL).

I didn't take pics as I was going along because it was the first time I'd attempted this and I wanted to do it before she got antsy. But it really is self explanatory. I'll walk you through it anyway.

You start at the bottom and do a part all the way across the head. With short hair you have to start up higher (at least we did) than you would if you had long hair. Sophia's hair is cut in an A-line cut so her middle back is VERY short.

Make your two piggies at the bottom. Then do another part above that one and do three more piggies, one right in the center between the two below it. In the center piggy you should have half of each bottom row piggy. The other half will go into the side piggy. (This is how you do climbers, no matter WHERE it is on the head.)

Then you gather them all into piggies on the top (split that middle one again) and on your last 'pull' don't pull it all the way through, creating loops. I make them small and tug at them to make them messy.

From now on I promise to do step by step. And I"ll do this one again in a few weeks to get some better step shots.

I love looking at hair blogs, but I'm sad that there aren't any of SHORT hair. At least that I've found. So here I am, modifying all these cute styles that I see on long hair blogs. It CAN be done most of the time. I PROMISE. Sometimes you just get creative ;)
